Voyage à Pitchipoï tells the tragedy of a Jewish family in France during the war, a tragedy that was shared by millions of other families. In 1942, the author of this book was six years old. His family was arrested by German and French gendarmes and scattered. The narrator and his little sister were first entrusted to neighbors until the village mayor enforced the decision of the SS Captain, Commander of the region and responsible for anti-Semitic repressive measures: "The reception of Jewish children in French families is undesirable and will not be authorized under any circumstances." The two children were then imprisoned, then transferred to the Drancy camp, where the little girl fell ill from malnutrition. Throughout this period, they received no news from their mother, who had miraculously managed to escape and had not been recaptured, despite the doors that had often closed when she asked for help. After months of living in hiding, they found their home again at the Liberation. They were never to see their father again.
