The Arctic aspect of Jørn Riel's work (dedicated partly to Paul-Émile Victor – the two men lived together on Ella Island? – and partly to Nugarssuguaq, Jørn Riel's Greenlandic granddaughter) consists primarily of the "Arctic Tales" series, a collection of short stories whose heroes – or magnificent anti-heroes – are always the same trappers from Northeast Greenland: boastful losers, a trashy writer, a nearsighted marksman, a bar philosopher drinking an undrinkable rotgut, kindly curmudgeons, and lovers of that cruelly absent being from the ice floe: women. Beyond the laughter, because these books are sure to cheer up even the most melancholic, Jørn Riel offers us a whole new vision of the world. He who has lived in the desert, be it a desert of sand or a desert of ice, knows how to get to the essence of things.
