With a diameter of approximately 70 km, the Cantal massif is one of Europe's most significant volcanoes. Peaks, mountains, and planèzes have gradually replaced the enormous original volcano. From the Plomb du Cantal or the Puy Mary, you'll fully appreciate this almost mountainous region, which has become an immense high-altitude pasture. Further east, perched on its basaltic promontory, Saint-Flour jealously guards the memory of its past prosperity through its bishopric and cathedral. It is the gateway to the flattened, granite-strewn summits of the Margeride, the Truyère gorges, and the vast basaltic plateau of the Planèze.
