Veronika, a young and beautiful Slovenian woman, seems to have everything she could wish for in life. Yet, she is not happy. On November 21, 1997, she decides to die. Her suicide attempt leads her to the psychiatric hospital of Villete where she rubs shoulders with truly insane people, but also with an apparently normal population who seems to have taken refuge behind the high walls of the asylum out of fear of the unknown, a desire for security, or weariness of a routine existence. There, Veronika understands that, at every minute of our existence, we have the choice between living and giving up and that, to feel fully alive, she will have to recognize the part of madness she carries within her. "Stay mad, but behave like normal people. Take the risk of being different, but learn to do so without attracting attention. And let your true Self manifest itself. - What is the true Self? asks Veronika. - It's what you are, not what they made you. " And Veronika, who was unable to grasp her own desires, will discover in Villete the freedom to surrender to them.
