The croquembouche arrives, on a huge tray carried by two waiters. Vincent watches this Tower of Babel made of cream puffs sway to the rhythm of their steps, topped with the traditional bride and groom figurines. He thinks: That's me, that little fellow, right at the top. That's me. He wonders who could have invented such a ridiculous cake. This grotesque pyramid punctuated with tiny silver sugar grains, pistachio green unleavened bread leaves, and marzipan roses, this pastry monstrosity on its nougatine base. And this couple of figurines perched at the top, what exactly do they symbolize?
