Like many young men of his generation, Clément, son of the Count of Lagarde d’Auriol, was mobilised in '14. As he left for the front, he left behind the beautiful Ernestine, their maid, who was carrying his child. A true scandal!
Several months later, the village learned that the young soldier had died somewhere in the Vosges… Desperate, rejected by Clément's family, then by her own, Ernestine decided to leave this country where single mothers were so poorly accepted.
Later, her daughter Clémentine would try to lead a normal life with her maternal grandparents, who had finally reconciled with her mother. But the memory of her father, "fallen on the field of honour," soon became an obsession. When, as an adult, Clémentine finally found his trace, her life underwent an immense upheaval…
Hervé PIJAC lives in Montpellier. He is the author of several historical novels, a genre he particularly enjoys.
At the very end of the novel "Une part d’ombre," an unprecedented historical study on Deserters and Conscientious Objectors of the Great War, written by the author, is included.
