Orphaned by a free-spirited mother and an unknown father, Ivan Levaï began his life in France under Pétain. He was 7 years old when General de Gaulle exclaimed from the balcony of the Hôtel de Ville: "We are at home here in Paris, risen and standing to liberate itself, and which has done so with its own hands." It was there, near the Seine, that the hidden child from the Danube decided to be French and later a journalist, in order to recount what he heard and saw.
