Orgon's household knows only one master: Tartuffe. Dressed in dark clothing and with a severe expression, the man has won the favor of the head of the family: he is the sole confidant of his secrets, all his actions are lauded. To further secure his attachment, Orgon even offers him his daughter in marriage... But beneath the guise of the devout man hides a clever impostor, a mix of fatal seduction and moral impunity, more interested in his host's fortune and wife than in the salvation of his neighbor. Since the play's creation in 1669 - after two bans - this dark soul has continued to ensnare successive generations of readers and spectators in its thick mystery. From Louis Jouvet's production at the Athénée Théâtre in 1950 to Stéphane Braunschweig's at the Odéon-Théâtre de l'Europe in 2008, this edition evokes the most famous performances of the play. It also offers two text groupings (the condemnation of hypocrisy among 17th-century moralists and the reception of the play throughout the ages).
