Suzanne, a Parisian, takes refuge in the countryside to forget the death of her husband. There she meets Marcelin, a farmer, a quiet man with whom she will soon find new love. But Marcellin is married, and the anonymity of the big city, conducive to forbidden loves, does not exist in the countryside. Could Marcellin, without destroying himself, abandon his land and his roots for Suzanne? She hesitates, considering for a moment returning to the city where another man calls her, ready to marry her. The novelist of Mère et Filles and La Maison de Jade excels at depicting the conflict that then arises. Suzanne, however, will gain a certainty: far from Paris, where one is more rushed and freer, the heart knows how to combine passion and patience, the haste to love and the slow happiness of ripening.
