José, a young Portuguese man, a handyman in a hotel, and an occasional prostitute, dreams of conquering America, the America of films and Westerns, to offer it to Marie, the little maid who loves him with a fearful devotion, ready to follow him even to death. Around them revolve the tutelary (and pathetic) figures of their destiny: Jacques, the writer, a former patron of José; the "baroness," the hotel manager, seduced by the boy's youth; Marie's father, an inconsolable widower who descends into alcoholism and madness. José and Marie flee in pursuit of their dreams. They wanted America. Their journey inevitably ends on a large beach in Languedoc. But before that, there will have been just a little time for a true love.
