This work presents maritime dramas with happy endings. In about forty vignettes with a strong evocative power, it recounts the lifesaving acts accomplished by ordinary people. From Noumea to Douarnenez, from Vendée to the Provençal coasts, offshore or on the beaches, it relates incidents briefly archived in the Annales du sauvetage maritime between 1891 and 1931: the actions of individuals who, because the sea demands it everywhere and always, went without thinking to help their fellow human beings. By considering this collection of tiny stories, Philippe Artières proposes the outline of a "history of the minor," a history of the low hum deeply rooted in daily life and common sense, which questions the making of events and heroes.
