Discovered during the filming of Tony Gatlif's "Latcho Drom", the Roma families that make up the group "Kek Lang" (blue flame) come from a small village near Nyabator in eastern Hungary where the songs still breathe of mud, smoke from the fire, bad vodka, and curses. Highly representative of an original Romani style, the group - men and women alike - performs responsorial songs, oscillating between heterophony and archaic polyphony, accompanied by a pitcher or spoons as percussion, and embellished by accordion and folk-inflected guitars. To experience these Romani songs, one must shed all musical logic, surrender, and allow oneself to be enveloped in an emotional disorder where bitterness drowns in a kind of festive and naive disarray. Thus, their celebrations are a defiance of the industrial and technological coldness of our era.
