Abe Ravelstein is a brilliant professor at the University of Chicago and a man who prides himself on having trained all the influential figures in politics. He lived lavishly – largely beyond his means. His friend Chick, the narrator, suggested he present his political philosophy in a book aimed at a general audience. To his own surprise, Ravelstein does so and becomes a millionaire. During a stay in Paris to celebrate this success, Ravelstein, in turn, suggests that Chick write a book about him, and the two exchange thoughts on death, philosophy, history, loves and friends, and anecdotes from the past. The mood darkens upon their return to the Midwest as Ravelstein succumbs to AIDS, while Chick himself narrowly escapes death. Saul Bellow's last novel is a journey, at times dark, at times ferociously funny, through love and memory; it is a hymn to friendship and life.
