Puglia, spring 1946. On one side are the Porro sisters, who live reclusive lives in their palace and ignore the world around them. On the other are the farm labourers, shaken by the war and tormented by hunger. The sisters continue to maintain their social standing, attend church, and diligently work on their embroidery. The workers, for their part, are mobilising to find work, feed their children, and contain the pressure from refugees flocking to the heel of Italy. On this day in March 1946, the crowd gathers in the square where the noble residence stands for a union meeting when a gunshot rings out... Milena Agus has filled in the gaps of this true story with her imagination. She brings the Porro sisters back to life before the reader's eyes, as much prisoners of their social condition as the peasants, but guilty of not having opened their eyes to the cruelties of History. Luciana Castellina tells us about this episode of History within the troubled context of the time: the Allied landing in Southern Italy, the dissolution of the Fascist Party, the establishment of the king in Brindisi, the arrival of refugees in Puglia, and the peasant revolts. A surge of violence that historians have almost completely ignored and which today takes on its full significance.
