"We know: human activity is disrupting the natural balances that have made our planet habitable - balances that took millions of years to establish. The countdown has begun. For countless animal and plant species, it is already too late. As for humans, hundreds of millions are suffering from the weakening of their resources and pollution, and tomorrow even more will be victims of climate disruptions that will drive them from their lands and push them to emigrate north, where another form of misery awaits them.
Yes, we know, but we do nothing, or so little. Politicians in so-called rich countries are clashing over issues that will soon seem trivial in the face of rising ecological dangers.
Yet, it may not be too late. The 2007 presidential election in France is an opportunity to place ecology at the heart of the political debate and elect a candidate capable of changing the trajectory that is leading us to the abyss.
In the spring of 2006, I asked the Ecological Monitoring Committee of my foundation to work with me on what could form the basis of an ecological pact between the French people and their new president. This action program, both ambitious and realistic, aims to clearly define political objectives and propose concrete measures, technically and legally applicable from the beginning of his mandate, as well as priority diplomatic initiatives.
The result of this work is the book you hold in your hands. I ask you to help me challenge all candidates for the highest office and invite them to comment on the measures we propose: are they ready to subscribe to the ecological pact? If so, in what way? If not, what do they propose to do?
In the 18th century, the France of the Enlightenment showed the rest of the world that man could take control of his destiny. It can again be at the forefront of a fundamental change for humankind.
This is no longer a time for reflection, analysis or vain sectarian quarrels.
Let's act together before it's too late." Nicolas Hulot This book was printed on 100% recycled paper.
