The old Professor Serebryakov has come to retire in the countryside, at his first wife's house. This arrival disrupts the peaceful life of Sonya, the professor's daughter, and Uncle Vanya, who together barely manage the estate. Especially since the attention of those close to them, including Vanya, soon focuses on Yelena, the professor's second and very desirable wife.

In this drama, Chekhov's ability to reproduce atmospheres, his very language, highlights the essential: that beauty comes from simplicity and that the characters draw the meaning of their existence from everyday life, even if it is trivial and resigned.
