The story features a writer who employs a fourteen-year-old boy he met in the streets of Marseille, Vincent, nicknamed Moustique (Mosquito), and takes him on a journey. Moustique is a resourceful character full of fantasy, who also has his pride and a taste for independence. Above all, he is a wonderful storyteller. "Eloquence and the joy of expression come to him as naturally as breathing." Moustique is a picaresque novel, the adventures of a man and an adolescent between whom there was all of life in its fantasy. Montherlant wrote this account of the freedom to live and act in 1929 and never had it published. It appeared for the first time in 1986. With the publication of Moustique, another touch is added to the author's figure, to the Roman mask under which his audience and he himself had frozen him. Behind the ardent but draped poet of Aux fontaines du désir (1927) lies a traveler fond of mischievous adventures, attuned to social realities, customs, and popular language.
