"I have been interviewing serial killers for thirty years. I have met more than seventy of these repeat offenders, both male and female, all over the world. I have accumulated criminology books, true crime newspapers, police archives, photos and videos of crime scenes, confessions, drawings and writings.
In my books, I have always presented serial killers in a detached manner, without passing judgment or expressing my feelings. In My Conversations with Killers, I want to share with you what goes on behind the scenes. To show you the physical ordeal of these encounters, the moments of anxiety that precede the interviews, the fear, sometimes. Twenty years later, my body still remembers the terror that gripped me during my meeting with Gerard Schaefer, a former police officer accused of murdering 34 women in Florida. From the moment I found myself facing him, I had the feeling of being confronted with absolute Evil.
I am mentally prepared to meet these more or less extraordinary "characters." But when I return to Paris, I sometimes wonder if these journeys really happened. Yes, they are very real. And incredible."
