The father's place. Before dying, Hélène, a drug addict, entrusts her son to her best friend, Pierrot. Little Marcus is not yet ten years old. Pierrot, in his thirties, hesitates before such a responsibility. He gets up before dawn to work in the northern markets and does not have an easy life. His group of friends promises to help him. Soon Pierrot, the tender-hearted, wounded man, begins to believe that happiness is within reach and that he will succeed with Marcus where his own father failed with him. But fate intervenes, throwing him into preventive detention for homicide. Inside the walls, life organizes itself. Outside, Marcus awaits him. Written in a language that blends classic and popular registers, Marcus is the most luminous novel there is about childhood and the voiceless.
PIERRE CHAZAL was born in 1977. He studied and lived in Lille, then in England, before returning to settle in Paris. He has been teaching French as a foreign language there for two years. Marcus is his first novel.
