November in London. Driving rain, of course. Déborah Saint-James, who suffers from recurrent miscarriages, is depressed... At the National Gallery, the sight of a radiant Virgin and Child by Leonardo da Vinci utterly destroys her morale. A pastor she meets at the museum invites her to visit him in Lancashire. Déborah and her husband therefore head north, hoping for a change of scenery. But, upon arrival, they learn that Robin Sage, their host, has just died from accidental poisoning. Simon Saint-James, a forensic expert, receives the news with skepticism: accidental ingestion of the poison that caused the death is almost impossible!
