1897. Matt, a determined young American farmer, flees the family farm to seek adventure. Hired on a San Francisco dock by two conspiratorial-looking men, he boards a steamboat heading north. There he learns the purpose of their expedition: the Klondike, an unknown Alaskan river that will soon become the stuff of legend. Gold has been found there, lots of gold. First come, first served. Swept up by gold fever himself, Matt braves the hostile mountains and raging rivers to reach the Klondike. Little by little, the young man is captivated by the Great North, which he tames through his mistakes. However, he cannot help but return to the town, and especially to the beautiful Marie who reigns in the saloons where she gives herself to the richest gold prospectors. When the terrible winter approaches, while others continue to seek their fortune, he decides to venture deeper into this wild country. Initiated by an old trapper, he learns to hunt for food, to drive dog sleds, to converse with the territories he discovers. Yet the day approaches when Matt will have to choose between gold and this sublime country, inhabited by a mysterious young Native American woman.
