Captain James Cook was one of the greatest sailors of the 18th century. During his three voyages around the world, he discovered new lands, mostly islands in the Pacific Ocean. His last expedition to the Pacific took place between 1776 and 1779: James Cook stopped in New Zealand, braved icebergs and the ice pack, and charted the Sandwich Islands.
