On June 6, 1944, Operation Overlord began. Nearly seven thousand ships of all types arrived on the coasts of Calvados and Manche. They carried over one hundred and fifty thousand men who had come to liberate France and Europe from Nazi rule. They parachuted into Sainte-Mère-l'Eglise and onto Pegasus Bridge, and landed on the beaches of Gold, Juno, Sword, Omaha, and Utah.
