In Musset's 1833 play Les Caprices de Marianne, we are presented with the two faces of a disillusioned youth: on one side, the dark Coelio, consumed by lovesickness; on the other, his ironic friend Octave, who bets on widespread derision. Between the two, the capricious Marianne makes the wrong choice – and Coelio is killed due to a misunderstanding. The painful deadlock of Romanticism: to die of love or to no longer believe in anything.
