1977. Martin Radford, a young London historian, arrives on the island of Madeira. There he meets Leo Sellick, who lives in the former property of Edwin Strafford, who died in 1951. In 1908, Strafford was Minister of the Interior alongside Lloyd George and Churchill, before abruptly resigning in 1910. The manuscript of his memoirs, found in the villa, should be able to explain this mysterious break, but Martin's reading of it raises new questions. Particularly about the role of Elizabeth, a suffragette with whom Strafford had a passionate love affair. Fascinated by the enigmas that punctuate this man's destiny, Martin decides to shed light on this affair. He will soon understand that many people have an interest in the veil never being lifted on Edwin Strafford's secret…
The author of "Heather Mallender Has Disappeared" and "One Autumn Morning" knows how to perfectly combine suspense, passion, and history. It's so good! This excellent novel defies time like a vintage wine. Olivia de Lamberterie, Elle.
