On December 8, 1995, Jean-Dominique Bauby was suddenly plunged into a deep coma by a stroke. When he emerged, all his motor functions were impaired. Afflicted with what medicine calls "locked-in syndrome" - literally: locked inside himself - he could no longer move, eat, speak, or even simply breathe without assistance. In his inert body, only one eye moves. This eye - the left one - is his link with the world, with others, with life. With his eye, he blinks once to say "yes," twice to say "no." With his eye, he draws his visitor's attention to the letters of the alphabet dictated to him and forms words, sentences, entire pages... With his eye, he wrote this book: every morning for weeks, he memorized the pages before dictating them, then correcting them. From under the glass bubble of his diving suit, where butterflies flutter, he sends us these postcards from a world we can only imagine - a world where nothing remains but a mind at work. The mind is alternately sarcastic and disillusioned, with a heart-wrenching intensity. When you have nothing left but words, no word is superfluous.
