Life started rather tragically for Mélaine: at one year old, she lost her parents. At four, her grandfather. And today, at eleven, her grandmother, Clarisse d'Avillon-Faucher, has just died. She has always been alone and neglected, she has always considered herself ugly and useless. But in a few days, everything changes. First, Mélaine inherits her grandmother's house and fortune. Then, she is taken in by two eccentric old cousins, Heidi and Gretchen, who have traveled around the world four times as photographers, and who decide to take her out of her chic and stuffy boarding school to teach her themselves how to swim, eat hamburgers, draw cats, and calculate the distance of stars. Finally, in one of her grandmother's photo albums, Mélaine discovers the portrait of an unknown little girl wearing a heart-shaped locket around her neck. Mélaine, however, has inherited a heart-shaped, dented and broken pendant from her grandmother. Who is the little girl? What happened to the locket to make it so damaged? To find out, Mélaine will have to unearth her family's dark secrets and confront thieves, murderers, and other ghosts from the past.
