Lucile in the first play and Lucinde in the second both want a husband, and as their fathers, too stubborn and miserly, refuse their suitors, they feign illness. At their bedside, usurpers and doctors bustle about, competing, some with ingenuity and malice, others with incompetence, pedantry, and buffoonery.

In writing "L'Amour médecin," just as he did "Le Médecin volant" ten years earlier, Molière, himself a victim of these charlatans, pondered a vengeful caricature. But his nature and genius were such that they transformed the farce into a comedy exquisite in its subtlety and charm.
