In the faith of the Church, the words of the Creed conclude their sequence on Jesus with these lines: "He is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, from whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead." What are we to understand by this statement? What does it say about the figure of Jesus, beyond the Gospels or simple liturgical expressions? Bernard Sesboué, one of the greatest contemporary theologians, answers in this brief catechetical approach. It is an opportunity for him to revisit, first, the resurrection and ascension, as manifestations of divine glory through Christ. Paradoxically, Christian faith affirms both the presence of a God already here, among us, and an expectation, a hope turned towards the end of time. Finally, in the affirmation of the Apostles' Creed, the vision of the Last Judgment is formulated, the one that concerns the living and the dead. But what can such expressions mean at the beginning of the 21st century? Can we still speak of judgment, in the legal sense of the term, of purgatory, of hell or paradise? Is it credible to evoke eternal life? It is therefore a true small treatise on faith in Christ that is offered to us here.
