Nothing seems likely to disturb the orderly and protected existence of Pemberley, the ancestral home of the Darcy family in Derbyshire, nor to disrupt the conjugal happiness of the lady of the house, Elizabeth Darcy. She is the mother of two charming children; her favorite sister, Jane, and her husband, Bingley, live less than thirty kilometers away; and her adored father, Mr. Bennet, regularly visits, drawn by the imposing library of the castle. But this bliss is suddenly threatened when, on the eve of the autumn ball, a tragedy forces the Darcys to receive Elizabeth's younger sister and her husband, whose past escapades have made them unwelcome at Pemberley, under their roof. With them come death, suspicion, and the resurgence of old grievances.
In Death Comes to Pemberley, P.D. James combines her long-standing passion for Jane Austen's work with her talent as a crime novelist to imagine a sequel to Pride and Prejudice and brilliantly set a suspenseful plot. She combines great fidelity to Austen's characters with the purest style of her detective novels, not failing, as is her custom, to address social issues – here, those of early 19th century England.
