On February 9, 1949, floating in the turbulent waters at the bottom of the Puits d'Enfer chasm, near Les Sables d'Olonne, the body of a man was discovered tied up and gagged in a wicker trunk. It was the beginning of one of the most famous post-war cases that would lead the police from the Vendée coast to Paris, where the crime had taken place and where the investigation was organized.
