"Today, globalization is not working. It is not working for the world's poor. It is not working for the environment. It is not working for the stability of the global economy."
The author of these lines? Professor Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel laureate in economics, former advisor to Bill Clinton, who in November 1999 resigned from his post as chief economist and vice-president of the World Bank: "Rather than being muzzled, I preferred to leave," he would explain. His book is an observation that amounts to an indictment: with supporting evidence, he demonstrates that the rules of the global economic game are often set only according to the interests of advanced industrialized countries – and certain private interests within them – and not those of the developing world.
Austerity policies, liberalization of capital markets, and privatizations are blindly applied, despite their proven failure, to all countries, particularly transition and developing countries.
Reading Joseph Stiglitz, one feels as though one understands the true stakes of today's world, and grasps the urgency of a profound reform of the status and policies advocated by international financial institutions.
Previously unpublished afterword by J. E. Stiglitz.
