This new collection addresses a need, a conviction, and an ambition, all at once. An ambition: to participate in the rebirth of a dual humanist culture, with roots that are simultaneously literary and scientific. The existence of "little classics" where everyone can encounter Montaigne, Racine, or Victor Hugo has certainly made literary culture more accessible to the greatest number; we would like to offer the same opportunities in the scientific and, more specifically, mathematical domain. A conviction: it is possible to share with everyone the pleasure of following, in the original historical texts, the intellectual journey of those who were the first to conceive, understand, or explain the good ideas that led to the emergence and progress of the concepts that build our mathematics. A need: the knowledge and cultural context of today's citizen are certainly not scientific enough given their potential responsibilities; hence, our desire to propose an approach parallel to the standard school curriculum, opening mathematics to history and culture.
