GREAT TEXTS OF THE 20TH CENTURY 1914. Everything was going Adrien's way, an engineer officer. War breaks out, and during a reconnaissance mission on the banks of the Meuse, a shell fragment disfigures him. He becomes a "gueule cassée" (broken face). Adrien won't experience the trenches but the Val-de-Grâce military hospital, in a room reserved for officers. A room without a mirror, where one can only see oneself in the eyes of others.
Adrien will stay there for five years. Five years to think about what comes next, to think about Clémence who knew him with his angelic face...
"We won't forget Marc Dugain's first novel, which, in a simple and concise style, managed to restore all of Adrien's humanity to his face." Jérôme Garcin – L'Obs
