June 16, 1816. A storm is brewing. In a town hidden among the trees, on the pleasant shores of Lake Geneva, a small group of people is bored. There are two poets, Byron and Shelley, their companions, Claire and Mary, and a doctor, Polidori. They tell each other horrific stories, in the fashion of the time. They even decide to write some. That night, young Mary - not yet nineteen - cannot sleep: she dreams of a "hideous phantasm of a man." A few days later, Victor Frankenstein and his creature are born. A tale of unsettling novelty, soon brought to the stage, and very often to the screen thereafter. It became so mythical that, in the public mind which has forgotten Mary Shelley, the creator and his creature have merged... In our historical and literary dossier, we will find avatars of this story of life after death and mad scientists in Balzac, Villiers de L'Isle-Adam, Meyrink, and many others. But there are also modern reinterpretations of the myth - listed here - of which science fiction writer Brian Aldiss is the most brilliant representative.
