Lucas Castle, perched on its promontory, overlooks the clear, sparkling river where Just usually swims with his brother. On the bank stands a slender figure whom Just recognizes: it's Maurine, the chatelain's daughter; she is also, he instantly understood, the "great affair" of his life. Alas! The two children belong to worlds that are too different. These differences are exacerbated by the nascent conflict between Maurine's father, who drives a large luxury car, and Just's father, who still plows his fields with the strength of his horse, the former wanting to buy the latter's land.
