Agamemnon, the King of Kings, sacrificed his daughter to the gods. His wife, Clytemnestra, aided by her lover Aegisthus, murders him upon his return from the Trojan War. Orestes, the son, is banished. Electra, the second daughter, remains. "She does nothing. She says nothing. But she is there." So Aegisthus wants to marry her off to divert to "the family of Theocathocles everything that might one day cast an unfortunate light on the family of the Atreides." But Orestes returns, and now Electra is nothing but hatred, consumed by a thirst for justice and revenge, regardless of the threat hanging over her family's kingdom.
Based on this great myth of antiquity, Jean Giraudoux wrote arguably his best play. Electra possesses great tragic power without ever losing the sparkling wit and humor that made Jean Giraudoux one of the greatest writers of the 20th century.
