Dom Juan has just left his wife to try and steal a young fiancée from her future husband, a young woman too smitten with her suitor for him not to think of disrupting their happiness. Then he sets his sights on young peasant women, whom he promises to marry. Sganarelle, though timidly attempting to bring his libertine master back to the path of virtue and religion, finds Dom Juan preferring the transient pleasures of this world, so dangerous for his salvation, to the hope of infinite bliss. Others, however, will warn him that "a wicked life leads to a wicked death"...
Coming from Tirso de Molina and his Burlador de Sevilla, the subject Molière tackled in 1665 had already been the basis for numerous plays. Yet, nothing is more personal than these five acts in prose, conducted with brilliant mastery, which give the characters the depth of true humanity. From farce to the finest irony, the play offers all registers of comedy. But it is also the most tragic of comedies, taking on the dimension of a metaphysical drama.
Edition presented and annotated by Jean-Pierre Collinet.
