A man of science and rationality, Albert Jacquard was also a man of commitment whose struggles and ideals remained imbued with evangelical morality.
Raised in the Catholic faith, he chose here to reflect on his relationship with God and faith, using the Christian Creed as his starting point, which he commented on phrase by phrase, asking himself what a 21st-century scientist could retain from this prayer. How can God be presented as "father"? How can one believe in "the resurrection of the body" or the virginity of Mary? Above all, how can one accept the sanctity of the Catholic Church, with all that we know of its history? These are just some of the questions on which he declares himself skeptical.
But, having completed this final inventory, Albert Jacquard returns to what remains essential in his eyes: it is not necessary to believe in dogmas and belong to a Church to embrace the profound message of the Sermon on the Mount, where love of neighbour and the spirit of peace assert themselves as eternal and universal values.
