The story gets off to a very bad start. In accordance with her family's wishes, Mary O'Malley, daughter of Irish gentry, learns, as she leaves the church where she has just married her neighbor Brian O'Neill, that her younger sister, Grace, is pregnant by him. In ultra-Catholic Ireland of 1880, some things just aren't done. To avoid making the scandal worse, the families order the couple to separate, the lovers to be exiled, and Mary to be exiled, even more cruelly, to Tolstoy and Rasputin's distant Russia. Thirty years later, one of the two sisters is still living out her miserable destiny. The other, showered with wealth and success, is secretly preparing her return home to finally quench her thirst for revenge.
