The First Siege of La Rochelle In the year of grace 1573, in La Rochelle, men die every day, on both sides of the ramparts. Awaited by a throne in Poland, Henri III grows weary of a siege that drags on and seeks only an honorable way out... Yet, Constance and Mathieu, whose idyll may depend on the duration of the conflict, can hardly rejoice at the persistent rumors of peace circulating for several days. Should they therefore wish for the war to continue? Around them, the city teems with a vibrant population: Anabaptist merchants preaching excess, soldiers feasting, nobles hesitating between ideals and tomorrow... A vigorous and generous text, in the sense that life is never absent from it.

Pierre Brochon was born in 1922. Becoming a teacher in Ronce-Les-Bains, he quickly developed a passion for local history, the history of song, and social history. He published numerous works on these themes, as well as collections of poetry and short stories.

The cover illustration is a 17th-century wooden painting preserved in the Château d'Oiron, by an unknown artist (Photo Pinel).
