In 1897, at the age of 29, Edmond Rostand, then an unknown author, achieved an unprecedented triumph in the theatre. He had just presented to the public the passions of a trio of young people, where Christian, so handsome but so unpoetic, borrowed Cyrano's words of love to seduce the beautiful Roxane. Unbeknownst to her, she succumbs to Cyrano's inner charm, with his exhilarating eloquence.

Beyond its most famous bravura passages, Cyrano de Bergerac is first and foremost a tragedy of intoxication, from the drunkenness of the secondary characters to the rapture of its heroes.
