For many, Charles Spencer Chaplin (1889-1977) is synonymous with the character of Charlot, known in the United States as "The Tramp," the vagabond from The Kid or City Lights. However, the little man with the cane and bowler hat is far from occupying all of Chaplin's filmography, as he was also a great director. One only needs to mention A Woman of Paris, Monsieur Verdoux, or A Countess from Hong Kong. Charlot eclipsed Chaplin due to his early success with the public during the early years of cinema. But talent alone doesn't explain everything; a character must resonate with their era, express its truths and lies. Charlot-Chaplin was that man, of whom Cocteau said he was "the surveyor of Kafka's Castle."
