Candide, or Optimism, Voltaire

Driven from the castle of his childhood, his "earthly paradise," Candide is unwillingly drawn into a succession of calamitous adventures. He is surprised, offended, and laments... Could humanity be fundamentally evil? The young boy witnesses, powerless, the death of his dream: that of a perfect world. Losing his naiveté and his "optimism," he gradually resigns himself.
