The story of this young Hara-Kiri journalist, who from 1987 to 2000 transcribed the rumors of the world, is now legendary. Every working day (and there's always a pub open for the honest thirsty soul), leaning at the bar or sitting in the room, Jean-Marie Gourio would jot down strange sentences in a small notebook that nonetheless possessed astonishing poetic power. From these came the Brèves de Comptoir (Barroom Briefs): that was just twenty years ago!

To celebrate the anniversary of this singular adventure, Jean-Marie Gourio wanted to offer his readers six hundred new briefs mixed with an anthology of his favorite briefs: the magic still works, and clever indeed are those who can spot the old and the new.

This collection is a "passage" to a new beginning, because, let it be known, Jean-Marie Gourio has bought himself a new notebook and pencil. In pubs, in squares, in shops, or on your street corner, he has resumed his obsessive quest. Tirelessly, at every hour of the day and night, human beings talk, and in this irrepressible flow, superb gems roll and shine. Gourio thus reconnects with a personal and literary practice and will provide us each year with a collection of what will henceforth be called Les Nouvelles Brèves de Comptoir (The New Barroom Briefs). The first volume will be published in October 2008.
