Lorenzo de' Medici, the eponymous hero, lacks neither grandeur nor complexity. A notorious libertine and purveyor of pleasures for Alexander, the perverse tyrant who reigns over Florence, the young man gradually reveals another side of himself. No, he is not entirely contaminated by the pervasive evil but has kept a true purity deep within him, to the point of killing Alexander in the name of a personal and political ideal.
While Lorenzaccio is set in 16th-century Italy, this drama nonetheless resonates with the political news of the post-1830 years, when Louis-Philippe's power, which had generated great hopes, hardened and severely repressed republican initiatives. And if it is one of the most performed romantic dramas, it is because it stages the individual facing himself and society, essential and timeless issues.
