The world is a masquerade where success preferentially goes to scoundrels. Success, honors, women, and power: the world has hardly changed. You still find—minus the mustaches—in newsrooms or elsewhere, these young adventurers of careerism and sex.
Maupassant said of his character, the odious Duroy: "Bel-Ami, that's me." And in terms of cynicism, sensual fury, atheism, and fear of death, they were quite similar. But Bel-Ami couldn't write, and became the lover and exploiter of a talented and brilliant woman. Maupassant, on the other hand, was a great writer. Universal even then, and still alive today.
