Bearn o La sala de les nines is the most successful work of Llorenç Villalonga's narrative. Within a framework of possible autobiographical echoes and through a long letter written by Joan Mayol, chaplain of Bearn and possibly the protagonist's illegitimate son, the personality of Don Toni, from Bearn, a great admirer of the "Age of Enlightenment", is outlined. Through a game of oppositions and ambivalences and the portrayal of a declining social class, the author has constructed the great elegiac poem of a lost paradise and elevated to myth the decadent world of the Mallorcan rural aristocracy at the end of the 19th century.
