After the Trojan War, Andromache, Hector's widow, became, along with her son Astyanax, the captive of Pyrrhus, King of Epirus. Enamored of her while he was supposed to marry Hermione, he gives her a choice: marriage to him or the death of her son. But sacrificing the child Hector entrusted to her or saving him by marrying Pyrrhus is always betraying the memory of her deceased husband. Loyalty or betrayal is also the dilemma of Orestes, who is enamored of Hermione. Charged with an embassy to Pyrrhus, who is to hand over Astyanax to him, he hopes for a refusal: if Pyrrhus, out of love, keeps Andromache's son, he will send Hermione back.

In 1667, the originality of Andromache is undoubtedly to construct two such different universes face to face, whose tensions intertwine: that of Hermione, Pyrrhus, and Orestes, driven by the most blind passion, and that of Andromache, inhabited solely by the love of a child and a dead man – Andromache, a dark silhouette standing against a backdrop of fire.
