Tom Lasker, a farmer from Dakota, discovers a brand new boat while digging in his field. This is already surprising thousands of miles from the ocean; but what's more, when it turns out that this boat is made of an unknown, indestructible material, and that it has probably been buried there for several thousand years - since the time when an inland sea stretched across the region - it becomes simply incredible. Following the ancient shoreline of this sea, a team of researchers unearths - in the heart of Indian territory - a curious artifact, clearly of extraterrestrial origin, which appears to serve as a launch platform for other planets. So, all it takes is for the Indians to express a desire to use it to rediscover their old way of life on another world, and for panic to spread through industrial and financial circles - worried about the socio-economic upheavals that the discovery of new technologies and indestructible materials is bound to bring - for the government to wonder if it wouldn't be better to destroy it... But they haven't reckoned with the scientists who, with the help of the Indians, are starting to organize the resistance!
